Last verified: August 2026 · by the China Trip Plans team
Planning a first trip to China is exciting — but the big question is always "how much will it actually cost?" This calculator turns that guesswork into a range you can budget around. Set your days, travel style and group size, and the tool shows a total budget range plus a per-person cost in RMB.
The estimate is built from a per-person-per-day baseline for each travel style. Accommodation uses (days − 1) nights — you sleep one fewer night than the days you're in the country. We then wrap the midpoint in a ±15% range to absorb seasonal variation.
What each travel style means
- Budget — hostels or budget hotels, street food and casual eats, metro and bus, free or low-cost sights.
- Comfort — 3-star hotels, proper restaurants, metro plus the occasional taxi, standard attraction tickets.
- Luxury — 4–5 star hotels, fine dining, private car or business class, premium experiences and shows.

How accurate is this China budget estimate?
It's a planning estimate, not a quote. We use a per-person-per-day baseline for each travel style, then apply a ±15% range to account for city-tier and seasonal variation. Actual costs in Shanghai or Beijing run higher than smaller cities; holidays spike hotel prices.
Why does the budget use (days − 1) nights?
You sleep one fewer night than the number of days you're in the country — a 7-day trip means 6 hotel nights. The calculator applies this automatically.
What counts as 'intercity transport'?
The cost of moving between cities, modeled as high-speed rail legs. A 3-city trip has 2 legs (city 1 → city 2 → city 3). We use a typical second-class high-speed-rail fare per leg, per person.
