Flight Departure Calculator 2026

Don’t miss your flight home. This calculator tells you when to leave the hotel for the airport, based on Chinese city traffic and airline check-in rules.

Last verified: August 2026 · by the China Trip Plans team

Chinese megacity traffic is unpredictable, and international check-in closes earlier than you might expect. Pick your city and flight type in the tool above — it builds in a realistic buffer and returns the latest time you should walk out of your hotel door, so you leave with margin instead of panic.

How the calculator works

It adds up: travel time to the airport (by city and time of day), check-in/bag-drop buffer, security and immigration, and a contingency for jams. International flights need a longer lead than domestic.

City airport buffer times

  • Beijing (PEK/PKX), Shanghai (PVG/SHA), Guangzhou (CAN): allow 60–90 min just for the drive in rush hour, plus 3h before international departure.
  • Off-peak, smaller cities: 45–60 min drive, 2h before domestic.

International vs domestic cutoffs

International check-in typically closes 60 minutes before departure; domestic around 30–45. Missing the cutoff means missing the flight, so err early. Example: a 14:00 international departure from Shanghai means being through security at PVG by about 11:00 — the calculator works backward from there to your hotel door.

Frequently asked questions

How early for an international flight?

Aim to be at the airport 3 hours before departure in major Chinese cities.

What if there's a traffic jam?

The calculator adds a contingency, but for early-morning flights consider leaving the night before or booking a hotel near the airport.

Can I store luggage if I arrive early?

Many airports and apps offer left-luggage; the guide lists options per city.

Does the tool account for my hotel's location?

Use the city preset and add a few minutes if you're far out; the buffer is intentionally generous.
