The short answer
Best for: first-time visitors who want the headline sights (Great Wall, Forbidden City) without a frantic pace. A relaxed 3 to 4 day loop covers the imperial core, one Great Wall section, and the hutongs.
Think twice if: you have under two full days (Beijing alone deserves more), or you want remote nature over city history (save that for Zhangjiajie or Guilin). Pair Beijing with Xi'an and Shanghai for the classic first-trip route.

Set these up before you fly
Beijing is the easy part. The things that actually cause first-trip stress are the same everywhere in China, so handle them once:
- Visa. Many nationalities can now visit visa-free for short stays, and there's a 240-hour (10-day) transit-without-visa rule if you have an onward ticket to a third country or region. Eligibility depends on your passport and route, so confirm the current rules with official sources before you book, our 是否符合资格取决于你的护照和航线,因此在预订前请向官方渠道确认最新规定,我们的China visa guide中国签证指南 walks through it with a free checker.

2 Getting around Beijing
Getting around: fares at a glance (2026)
| Mode | What it costs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing Subway | ¥3-9 per ride | By distance. Single tickets at machines, or scan Alipay / WeChat QR at the gate. |
| Airport Express (to PEK T2/T3) | ¥25-30 | From Dongzhimen / Beixinqiao. Fastest link to the airport. |
| Taxi flagfall | ¥13 (first 3 km) | Then ~¥2.3/km. Insist on the meter. |
| DiDi (ride-hail) | App-priced | English interface available; pay via Alipay / WeChat bound card. |
| To Mutianyu Great Wall | ¥40-60 bus / ~¥500-800 private | Public bus + shuttle is cheapest; Mubus-style shuttles run ~¥100-150 round trip. |
Beijing is huge but its core sights cluster in two bands, the central axis (Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven) and the northwest (Summer Palace, some hutongs). The subway is your friend.
- Subway:地铁: clean, cheap, bilingual signs, and usually the fastest way across town. Pay with a QR code through Alipay's transit mini-program or a single-ride ticket. Avoid rush hour if you can, it gets packed.
- Didi:DiDi(滴滴): the local ride-hailing app (Uber doesn't operate in mainland China). Great for airport runs and late nights; the UI shows the price up front and works with English place names. You can also summon rides inside Alipay.
- Walking & bikes:步行与单车: the hutongs (old lane neighborhoods) are best on foot, and dockless bikes are everywhere if you want to roam like a local.
Beijing has two airports (Capital, north; Daxing, south) plus a couple of high-speed rail stations. 如果你要游览不止一座城市,high-speed rail高铁 is the comfortable way to reach Beijing from Shanghai, Xi'an, or other cities if you're touring more than one stop.
Pro tip: screenshot or save each destination's name in Chinese characters too. Showing a taxi driver or asking a local is far easier when you can just point at the characters.
3 Your 3 to 4 day Beijing plan
Day-by-day at a glance
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tiananmen Square (outside view) → Forbidden City central axis | Exit north gate → Jingshan Park panorama | Hutong lane dinner |
| 2 | Mutianyu Great Wall (cable car up, toboggan down) | Back in the city by late afternoon | Hutong stroll or Peking duck |
| 3 | Temple of Heaven park | Summer Palace lakeside gardens | Nanluoguxiang / Houhai hutongs at dusk |
| 4 (optional) | Lama Temple or 798 Art Zone | Local market / food street | Replay a favorite at a slower pace |
Three days hits the musts; four lets you breathe. Here's a loop that minimizes backtracking and leaves room for the accidental discoveries that make a first trip memorable.
Day 1第 1 天 The imperial center: Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Jingshan皇城核心:天安门、故宫、景山
- Start at 从Tiananmen Square天安门广场 (view from outside, it's enormous and best appreciated on foot).(在外围观看即可,它非常宏大,步行为佳)。
- Walk north into the 向北步行进入Forbidden City故宫, the former imperial palace. It's huge, pick a route (the central axis is the highlight) rather than trying to see it all.,即昔日的皇宫。
- Exit the north gate and climb 从北门出来,登上Jingshan Park景山公园 for the classic panorama back over the palace rooftops. Ten minutes up, best view in the city.,从那里回望宫殿屋顶的经典全景。
- Evening: dinner in a nearby hutong lane.
Book Forbidden City tickets online in advance, it's timed-entry and sells out on holidays. Bring your passport; it's your entry ticket.
Day 2第 2 天 The Great Wall (half day)长城(半天)
- Pick 选择Mutianyu慕田峪, restored, scenic, and far less crowded than Badaling, with a cable car up and a toboggan down if you want the fun version.,经过修缮、风景优美,且远比八达岭人少;若想玩得尽兴,可乘缆车上山、坐滑道下山。
- Go early; it's 1 to 2 hours from the city depending on traffic and the section.
- Back in the city by late afternoon, use the evening for a relaxed hutong stroll or a Peking duck dinner.
Avoid unrepaired "wild" sections: they're unsafe and sometimes restricted. One well-kept section is more than enough for a first visit.
Day 3第 3 天 Temples, a palace garden, and hutongs寺庙、皇家园林与胡同
- Morning: 上午:Temple of Heaven天坛, where emperors prayed for good harvests, beautiful park, easier-paced than Day 1.,皇帝曾在此祈求丰收,是一座美丽的园林,节奏比第 1 天更轻松。
- Afternoon: 下午:Summer Palace颐和园, a lakeside imperial garden (long walks, a marble boat, boat rides in warm months).,一座湖畔皇家园林(可长时间漫步、有石舫,暖季可乘船游湖)。
- Late afternoon/evening: wander a 下午晚些时候/傍晚:逛逛hutong胡同 district, Nanluoguxiang is lively; the lanes around Houhai are calmer and lovely at dusk.
Day 4第 4 天 Optional, go deeper or go slow可选:深入探索或放慢节奏
- Lama Temple (Yonghegong):雍和宫(Lama Temple): an active, ornate Tibetan-Buddhist monastery right on a subway line.
- 798 Art Zone:798 艺术区: former factory district turned galleries and cafés, a contrast to the imperial sights.
- Markets & food streets:市场与美食街: a morning at a local market beats another museum if you'd rather feel the city than read plaques.
- Or simply replay your favorite day at a slower pace, four days is about depth, not checking boxes.
4 Where to eat in Beijing

- Peking duck北京烤鸭 is the famous one, crisp skin, thin pancakes, scallion and sauce. Go once; it's a rite of passage.
- Hotpot火锅 (huǒguō): you cook slices of meat and veg in a bubbling broth at the table. Social, forgiving, and fun even if you don't know the dishes.(火锅):在桌上翻滚的汤底里涮肉片和蔬菜。

5 Money and budgeting
Beijing daily budget at a glance (2026)
| Tier | Daily spend | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ¥400-600 | Hostel / cheap hotel, street food + local eateries, subway, one paid sight. |
| Mid | ¥800-1,200 | 3-4 star hotel, mix of restaurants, occasional taxi, all major sights. |
| Comfort | ¥1,800+ | 4-5 star, fine dining, private car, guided tours. |
| Hotel only | ¥200 / ¥500-900 / ¥1,200+ | Budget / Mid / Comfort nightly rate. |
You don't need much cash. Alipay and WeChat Pay cover nearly everything; keep a few hundred yuan in cash only as a backup for tiny stalls or a dead phone. To sense what things cost, here's a rough daily range for a mid-budget visitor (per person, not including hotels):你不需要太多现金。
Food饮食
¥40 to 120 a meal at casual spots; ¥200 to 400 for a nice duck dinner.

Prices are indicative and change, so treat them as a planning range rather than a quote. Convert a few amounts to your own currency so the numbers feel real before you go:以上价格仅供参考,会有所变动,因此请把它们当作规划区间,而非报价。

6 Three etiquette quick wins
You won't offend anyone by missing a custom, Beijingers are warm and forgiving toward visitors who try. Three habits smooth the most moments:
- Learn "nǐ hǎo" (hello) and "xiè xie" (thank you). The effort alone wins goodwill everywhere.
- Don't tip. It's not a local custom; paying the stated price and saying thanks is correct.
- Mind the chopstick no-nos注意筷子的禁忌, don't stand them upright in your rice, and don't point them at people.

7 Beijing for First-Time Visitors: FAQ
Three full days covers the essentials, the Forbidden City, a Great Wall section, and one or two classic spots like the Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace. Four days lets you add a hutong wander, a food crawl, or a slower pace. If Beijing is your only China stop, 4 days is the sweet spot; if it's one of several cities, 3 is enough.
For a first visit, Mutianyu is the popular pick: restored, scenic, and less crowded than Badaling, with a cable car and (optionally) a toboggan down. Badaling is the easiest and most famous but the busiest. Jinshanling is quieter and more rugged if you want a real hike. Avoid 'wild' unrepaired sections, they're unsafe and sometimes restricted. Pick one and go early; the Wall is 1 to 2 hours from the city depending on the section.
Uber pulled out of mainland China years ago, so you'll use Didi instead, it's the local ride-hailing app, and you can also summon a car from inside Alipay. For getting around central Beijing the subway is almost always quicker, but Didi is the easy call for the airport (Capital or Daxing) or a late night when the trains have stopped. The app shows the fare up front and handles English place names, so you're not bargaining or guessing.
Alipay and WeChat Pay, linked to an international card before you land, will cover almost everything in Beijing, from Peking duck dinners to subway rides to the cab back to the hotel. The few spots that still prefer cash are the tiny hutong noodle joints, older teahouses, and the occasional market stall, so tuck away a few hundred yuan as a just-in-case. You won't need wads of it; the phone does the work.
Easier than you'd expect. Station names and signs are posted in both Chinese and English, the line diagram is straightforward, and you can tap in with a QR code from Alipay's transit mini-program or a single-ride ticket from a machine. Trains announce each stop in English too. It's the cheapest, most reliable way across this sprawling city, just dodge the 7:30 to 9:30 and 17:30 to 19:30 rushes if you can.
Stay near a major subway interchange so everywhere is reachable. The area around Wangfujing / Tiananmen gives walking access to the big sights; the Lama Temple (Yonghegong) and Guomao (CBD) areas are well-connected and calmer; and the hutong districts (e.g., near Nanluoguxiang or Houhai) put you among the old lanes for atmosphere. Pick 'near a subway line 1, 2, or 5 station' over a specific hotel brand.
Beijing is generally very safe for visitors, low violent crime, and solo walking is fine even in the evening. Petty pickpocketing is the main thing to watch in crowded tourist spots. On visas: many travelers can enter visa-free for short stays or use the 240-hour (10-day) transit-without-visa rule if they have an onward ticket to a third country/region, but eligibility depends on your nationality and route, so confirm the current rules with official sources before you book. Our China visa guide breaks it down.
Spring (April, May) and autumn (September, October) are the sweet spots, mild weather and clearer skies, which also means better photos of the Great Wall and the palace rooftops. Summer gets hot and jammed with domestic tourists; winter is cold but uncrowded and dramatic after a snowfall. Late-October blue-sky days are a local favorite. If you can, skip the week-long National Day holiday in early October, the headline sights are packed.
The Forbidden City is timed-entry with no ticket window at the gate, and it sells out on weekends and holidays, so book your slot a few days ahead through the official site or a trusted platform, and bring your passport (it's scanned at entry). Arrive at your timed slot rather than at dawn, but aim for earlier in the day if you want the central axis, from the Meridian Gate through to the Imperial Garden, before the tour groups swell around mid-morning.
Yes, the hutongs (the old lane neighborhoods) are best on foot, and you don't need a guide. Nanluoguxiang is the famous, lively one; for a calmer feel, wander the lanes around Houhai or near the Lama Temple, where you'll find courtyard homes, small bars, and quiet tea spots. Rent a dockless bike if you want to cover more ground. They're residential, so keep your voice down and ask before photographing inside a courtyard.
Mostly yes. Major sights have English signage, DiDi and Alipay have English modes, and two phrases carry you far: nǒ hǎo (hello) and xiè xie (thank you).
Very safe for tourists. Petty theft is rare; the main risk is pickpockets in dense crowds, so keep your phone in a front pocket on the subway.
Mobile pay rules. Foreign cards work inside Alipay and WeChat Pay once bound; carry a little cash (¥200-300) as backup for tiny stalls.
