China Subway QR Code 2026
Skip the ticket machines. Most Chinese metros let you scan a QR code from Alipay to enter — here’s how to set it up and ride like a local.
Chinese metros are fast, cheap, and the best way across huge cities — but the ticket machines are Chinese-only and crowded. The trick: enable a transit QR pass inside Alipay, then scan in and out at the gates. No card, no cash, no language barrier.
Why QR beats tokens and cards
One pass works across many cities and charges your linked card automatically — no deposit, no physical card to lose, and no trip to a service counter. It's the lowest-friction option for short-term visitors.
Enabling the metro pass in Alipay
- Open Alipay → search “Metro” / “出行” (Travel) in the city you're in.
- Pick the city's transit code, agree, and it's added to your wallet.
- Make sure a payment method is linked (see the Alipay setup guide).
Using it at the gate
Open the transit code, hold it to the scanner on the turnstile, walk through, and scan again on exit — the fare is deducted automatically. Follow the green-arrow gates; the wide gates are for luggage.

Which cities support QR transit?
Most major metros — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and many more. Enable the code per city in Alipay.
Do I need mobile data to scan?
You need to open the code (data or cached), but the gate scan itself is local — no live connection required at the turnstile.
What if Alipay fails at the gate?
Staff can help, or use a single-journey token machine; carrying a little cash covers edge cases.
Is it cheaper than DiDi?
Usually yes for solo trips; DiDi wins for groups or door-to-door in bad weather.
