How to Set Up Alipay in China as a Foreigner (Quick Answer)
Download the international version of Alipay, register with your own phone number, complete the in-app passport verification, then link a foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, or Amex card. Once linked, you pay by scanning a merchant's QR code or showing your own code for the cashier to scan. Payments under ¥200 carry no foreign-exchange fee; above ¥200 a 3% fee applies. Do this before you fly — China's app stores can block the install after you land.
Step-by-Step Alipay Setup
- Download. Get Alipay from your home App Store or Google Play. Pick the international version or let it switch to English automatically.
- Register. Open the app, tap Sign Up, choose your country code, and enter your regular phone number. The SMS code usually arrives in under a minute.
- Verify your passport. Tap Me (bottom right) → the arrow by your name → Identity Verification. Upload a clear photo of your passport's data page and a selfie. Most approvals finish in 1–3 minutes.
- Link your card. Go to Bank Cards → Add Card. Enter your Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, or Amex details. Set a 6-digit payment password when prompted.
- Test it. At a convenience store in the terminal, tap Scan, read the merchant code, and buy a water bottle. A 2-second success means you are ready.
How to Pay: Scan vs Show Code
There are two motions, and knowing both stops awkward fumbling at the register.
- You scan them (small shops, taxis, stalls): tap the blue Scan button, read the merchant's printed QR, type the amount, enter your password.
- They scan you (supermarkets, malls, chains): tap Pay/Receive, show your QR, the cashier scans it. Small amounts need no password.
Fees & Limits (2026)
- Under ¥200 per transaction: no international fee.
- Over ¥200 per transaction: 3% fee plus whatever your card issuer charges.
- Per-transaction cap: about ¥5,000.
- Monthly cap: about ¥50,000.
Tip: if a supermarket total is ¥300, ask to split it into two ¥150 payments and you pay zero fees. Your home bank may also add its own foreign-transaction fee, so tell your bank you are traveling to China so it does not block the charge.
Pay for the Metro with Alipay's Transport Code
You do not need a plastic metro card or a ticket machine. Alipay generates a transport QR code that deducts fares straight from your linked foreign card — this is the easiest way for a visitor to ride the subway.
- On the Alipay home screen, tap 出行 (Transport).
- Make sure the city in the top-left is set to where you are (for example, Shanghai or Beijing).
- Tap to activate the 地铁 (Metro) code (and a separate bus code if you need it).
- Scan that QR at the gate to enter and exit. The fare is taken automatically from your card.
Each city is a separate "card" inside the app, so when you move from Shanghai to Beijing, open Transport, switch the city, and activate the new code. The transport code works in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and 30+ other cities. Apple Pay also works for transit in some cities (Shanghai is the easiest), but Alipay's transport code is the most universal for visitors.
Common Alipay Mistakes
- Downloading after landing. China's app-store policy can block the install. Finish setup on home WiFi.
- Assuming your physical Visa works at the register. Outside luxury hotels, almost no merchant has a Visa terminal. The app is the rail.
- Burning the 3% fee on small splits. Keep daily purchases under ¥200 where you can.
- Forgetting to switch the transport city. Your Shanghai code will not open a Beijing gate.
- Card declined at first try. Usually your home bank blocking a "China" charge. Approve the fraud alert or call ahead.
City & Scenario Notes
In Beijing and Shanghai the transport code covers both metro and most buses. In some cities the bus and metro need separate activations — activate both before your first ride. At airports, test Alipay at the 7-Eleven inside the terminal before you head into the city, so any card issue surfaces while you still have airport WiFi.
Alipay is one of two payment apps you want. Our WeChat Pay setup guide covers the second one — install both, because a few small shops take only one. For connectivity that lets these apps and maps work, our China connectivity picker points you to the right SIM or eSIM.

Can I use Alipay in China without a Chinese bank account?
Yes. Since 2024 Alipay accepts foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, and Amex cards directly after in-app passport verification. You do not need a Chinese bank account.
What cards does Alipay accept from foreigners?
Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, and American Express all bind through the Bank Cards section. Travel cards such as Wise or Revolut also work and let you freeze them easily if needed.
Is there a fee to use Alipay as a tourist?
Payments under ¥200 are fee-free. Above ¥200 Alipay adds a 3% international fee on top of any charge from your own bank. Splitting larger buys into sub-¥200 payments avoids it.
Can I pay for the subway with Alipay?
Yes. Tap 出行 (Transport) on the home screen, set your city, and activate the 地铁 (Metro) code. Scan it at the gate; the fare is deducted from your linked foreign card automatically.
