Xianyu can save you a fortune on used gear — but it assumes you read Chinese, have Alipay verified, and can receive domestic deliveries. For a two-week trip, Taobao is usually the easier win. Xianyu rewards the patient and the longer-term visitor.
Xianyu (闲鱼, "idle fish") is Alibaba's consumer-to-consumer secondhand platform. Ordinary people list things they no longer want: phones, cameras, bikes, furniture, clothing, collectibles, even event tickets. Think of it as China's version of Craigslist-meets-eBay-used, but slicker and mobile-first.
01 Why Bother: The Prices
One line: sellers are individuals clearing clutter, so prices sit well below retail.
It's the place for discontinued items you can't find new, unique or vintage goods, and cheap gear for a longer stay. Convert a listing price to your currency before you commit:
02 The Real Barriers for Visitors
One line: built for locals — Chinese-only, Alipay-verified, domestic shipping only.
Be clear-eyed: Xianyu is built for locals, and several things make it harder for a short-term visitor than Taobao.
- Chinese-only interface. There is no English mode. You'll rely entirely on image search and a translate app (see Taobao: Finding Things Without Chinese for the same techniques).
- Alipay real-name verification. Trading requires Alipay's verified wallet. Foreigners can verify with a passport, but it's an extra setup step before you can buy or receive money.
- Domestic shipping only. Sellers ship within China. There's no built-in overseas delivery, so a hotel or local address is mandatory.
- Meetups are common. Many local trades are "面交" (meet in person, pay on the spot). That's fine if you're settled somewhere; less practical for a passing tourist.
03 When It's Worth It
One line: long stays, electronics, discontinued items, and quick local pickups.
- Long stays. Furnishing an apartment for a semester? A used desk, heater, or bike beats buying new.
- Electronics & cameras. Last-gen phones and lenses go cheap — but verify condition carefully (Section 05).
- Discontinued or niche items. Old phone models, region-specific gadgets, collectibles, concert tickets — often only findable here.
- Quick local deals. "Self-pickup" listings near you can be dramatically cheap if you can meet the seller.
For ordinary souvenirs and gifts, Taobao or physical shops remain simpler.
04 How a Trade Works
One line: search, haggle, pay into escrow, confirm on receipt — in that order, every time.

Use image search or paste a translated keyword. Filter by location to find meetup-friendly sellers.
Negotiate (砍价)
Haggling is expected. Open with an in-app message offering below the list price; many sellers counter. Keep it friendly.
Pay via Alipay escrow (担保交易)
Money is held by the platform and released only when you confirm receipt. This is your protection — use it every time.
Receive & confirm
For shipped items, inspect on arrival, then confirm in the app to release payment. For meetups, check the item before handing over cash in person.

It means the platform holds your money until you're satisfied. A listing screen shows the price, the 砍价 (negotiate) button, and the 担保交易 (escrow) tag.
05 Safety & Avoiding Scams
One line: in-app escrow only, test electronics before release, meet in public places.
Xianyu is widely used and mostly fine, but secondhand trades carry more risk than a Taobao purchase. Stay protected:
- Never pay outside the app. If a seller pushes you to WeChat transfer or "just send me the money directly", that's the #1 scam pattern. In-app escrow only.
- Verify electronics before release. For phones/cameras, test power, screen, and basic functions on receipt. Once you confirm, getting a refund is hard.
- Meetup safety. For in-person trades, pick a public, busy spot (a mall entrance, a café) during daylight. Tell a friend where you're going.
- Check the profile. A seller with a long history and good ratings is safer than a brand-new account with one hot listing.

- Do I need a Chinese ID to use Xianyu? You need Alipay, which foreigners can verify with a passport. No separate Chinese ID required.
- Can I pay with a foreign card directly? No — payment runs through Alipay, and the foreign-card binding is for the wallet, not Xianyu's escrow. Fund the wallet first.
- Is meetup (面交) safe? Usually fine in public, busy places during the day. Tell someone where you're going and check the item before paying.
- What if the item isn't as described? Open an in-app dispute; release escrow only after you're satisfied. Once released, refunds are hard.
- Should a short-term tourist bother? Often not — Taobao is simpler. Xianyu pays off for longer stays or specific discontinued items.
