Taobao sells almost everything at local prices — but the app is in Chinese and there is no English version. The trick isn't learning Chinese; it's using your camera, a translate app, and Alipay's foreign-card checkout.
Taobao is a consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer marketplace owned by Alibaba. Millions of individual shops and small brands list goods there — clothes, electronics, homeware, souvenirs, phone accessories, you name it. Prices are often a fraction of what you'd pay at a mall or back home. This page covers setup, payment, search tricks, shipping, and safety.
01 What Taobao Is (and Isn't)
One line: Taobao is the wild, huge, bargain-hunter's market — not Tmall, not JD.
It is not the same as Tmall (branded flagship stores) or JD.com (a first-party retailer with faster logistics). That's also why quality varies: some listings are excellent, others are cheap knockoffs — Section 05 covers how to tell the difference.
For a short trip, Taobao is best for things you'll use during your stay or ship home later — a spare phone cable, a local SIM card adapter, a tea set, gifts. For instant needs, physical shops (see Shopping & Tax) are faster.

02 How to Buy on Taobao
One line: account and Alipay first, then search, cart, pay, track — all inside the app.
Good news: you do not need a Chinese ID number, a local bank account, or residency to create a basic Taobao account. Register with a foreign phone number or an email address (verify via SMS or email code; a China SIM helps but isn't required at sign-up). The account starts as "basic" — enough to browse and buy. Some sellers restrict shipping until you link Alipay.
Search
Download the app (search "Taobao" in your app store) or use the mobile web version. Use image search or paste a translated Chinese keyword to find the item.
Cart & check the seller
Before adding to cart, look at the store rating, the 描述相符 (description-match) score, and buyer photos in reviews.
Pay via Alipay
Checkout runs through Alipay. Since 2024, Alipay accepts Visa, Mastercard, and JCB for foreign users, without a Chinese bank account.
Track shipment
Enter your hotel address at checkout (save it as "home"). Most items arrive in 2–4 days by domestic courier and you can track them in-app. Hotels are used to holding packages for guests.
03 Paying with a Foreign Card
One line: link your card inside Alipay, expect a ~3% fee and a per-transaction cap.

- There's a currency conversion fee of roughly 3% on foreign-card payments.
- Foreign cards often hit a per-transaction cap (commonly around ¥5,000). Big-ticket items may need splitting or another method.
- Payment is processed in RMB; your bank does the conversion. Check your card's foreign-transaction policy.
Card declined at checkout?
Make sure the card is enabled for international online payments, and that Alipay's foreign-card binding succeeded (not just a China-bank binding). See Money & Payments: What if payment fails? No Alipay yet? Set it up first — Taobao won't let you pay without it. The Alipay app has an English interface option for the wallet itself, even though Taobao's app stays in Chinese.

04 Finding Things Without Chinese
One line: four tools replace Chinese lessons — camera search is the best of them.
Image search
Tap the camera icon in the search bar and upload a photo of the item you want. This is the single most useful feature for visitors — show it a picture of the adapter or shoe, get matching listings.
Live translate
Use your phone's translate app (or Alipay's built-in translate) over the screen to read titles and specs in real time.
Browser translate
Open Taobao in a mobile browser with auto-translate on. Less smooth than the app, but readable.

A simplified, partially English mirror. Selection is limited and prices can be higher, but it's the easiest on-ramp if you're stuck.
For product names, a quick trick: search the English term on Google, then paste the Chinese name it shows into Taobao. Sellers also reuse English keywords in titles, so "phone case", "USB-C", or "tea set" sometimes surface directly. For clothing and shoes, convert your size to the Chinese system before ordering:
05 Shipping Overseas & Staying Safe
One line: consolidate for overseas shipping, and never pay outside the app.
Overseas shipping has two routes:
- Cainiao consolidation (集运). Ship multiple purchases to a domestic consolidation warehouse, then have them bundled and sent abroad in one box. Cheaper per item than separate international parcels, but slower (often 1–3 weeks) and with customs considerations.
- Agent / daigou. A forwarding service that receives, checks, and reshapes your goods, then ships internationally. More hands-on, often more reliable for fragile or valuable items.
Taobao is generally safe to pay through — the platform holds nothing unusually risky. The risks are quality and scam-adjacent behavior:
- Check the seller. Look at the store rating, the 描述相符 (description-match) score, and buyer photos in reviews. A shop with thousands of sales and a high score is usually fine.
- Spot fakes. Luxury-branded goods at 10% of retail are almost always counterfeit. Decide if that's acceptable to you; just don't expect the real thing.
- Never pay outside the app. If a seller asks you to move to WeChat or bank transfer to "avoid fees", walk away. In-app payment is your only protection.
- Use platform escrow. For some categories the money is held until you confirm receipt. Don't release it early, and open a dispute through Taobao's system if something's wrong.
Refunds work, but international returns rarely pay off.
Taobao's return system works, but international returns mean shipping back to China — often not worth it for cheap items. Buy carefully the first time. Want secondhand instead? Xianyu is Taobao's sister app for used, discontinued, or heavily discounted goods — with a different set of trade-offs.

- Can I use Taobao without a Chinese phone number? Yes. Register with an email or a foreign number; you only need a China number later for some seller chats.
- Why does checkout show RMB? Taobao processes in RMB through Alipay; your bank converts it, with a roughly 3% foreign-card fee.
- Is it safe to buy from Taobao? Platform payment is safe; the risk is item quality. Check store ratings and buyer photos before buying.
- Can I ship to my home country? Direct international shipping is limited; use Cainiao consolidation or an agent for overseas delivery.
- What if a seller asks for WeChat payment? Decline. Pay in-app only — that's your only buyer protection.
