Does Google, WhatsApp or Instagram Work in China? (Quick Answer)

It depends entirely on which network you are on. On a local Chinese SIM or on hotel and airport WiFi, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, YouTube, and Facebook are blocked. 3. Hotel or airport WiFi

Blocked, same as a local SIM. Chinese public WiFi sits behind the firewall too. Do not assume the hotel "business internet" opens Google — it does not. The one exception some travelers report is a hotel that provides its own VPN at the front desk, but that is unreliable and not something to plan around.

Why a Foreign eSIM Bypasses the Block

The Great Firewall filters traffic flowing through Chinese networks. A travel eSIM authenticates to a Chinese tower but sends your data back to the provider's gateway outside China before it reaches the internet. To the firewall you look like a normal international roamer, which global telecom agreements keep working. What Still Works Either Way

• WeChat and Alipay work on every network — they are Chinese apps and are exactly what you need for payments and messaging with locals.
• Apple services and Bing usually load even on a local SIM, but intermittently, so do not rely on them for something important.
• Google Maps works on a foreign eSIM, but note China map data is slightly offset for security reasons, so distances can be a touch off. Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps are more accurate on the ground.
