5 Key Takeaways5

  • Check the visa-free and 240 hour transit routes first; the L visa is only for trips they cannot cover.
  • Apply online through the COVA system, wait for the online review, then bring your passport to the visa center or consulate.
  • Standard processing is about four working days after passport submission; start four to six weeks before departure.
  • Documents are passport plus photo plus trip proof or invitation; the reduced US fee is a flat US$140 to the end of 2026.
  • After landing, file the arrival declaration, register your stay within 24 hours, and never work on an L visa.

1 Do you need an L visa? Who must apply in

The short answer: the L visa is the Chinese tourist visa, issued to foreign nationals whose reason for visiting mainland China is tourism. In 2026 it is no longer the default route for short visits. China gives 30 day unilateral visa-free entry to ordinary passport holders of 50 countries, and its 240 hour (10 day) visa-free transit scheme is open to many more nationalities at dozens of ports. You only need this guide when neither of those routes fits your trip.

You belong in the L visa queue if any of these is true: your passport is not on the 50 country visa-free list, and the United States is the clearest example of a major passport that is not on it; you are on the visa-free list but want to stay longer than the 30 free days; your full stay runs past 10 days; or your route does not satisfy the transit rules, because a return ticket straight home from China does not qualify for 240 hour transit, which requires an onward ticket to a third country or region.

Do not assume that everyone with a weak passport needs this visa, and do not assume that every short trip needs one either. The best first step is to check your own situation. Read the 240 hour transit guide240 小时过境免签指南 if your trip is short and passes through China on the way to another country, and the broader China visa guide中国签证指南 if you want the full entry picture including the visa-free list. If you are still unsure whether your passport qualifies for any visa-free route, our free visa tools免费签证工具 let you test your nationality in a minute.

Everything below assumes the L visa is genuinely the right category for you: your entry reason is sightseeing and holidays, your trip is not a quick transit, and your stay is short rather than long term. If your reason is business, study, work or family, you need a different visa letter, and the next section shows how to tell them apart.

2 L vs M, F and Z: which visa fits your trip L 与 M、F、Z 签证对比:哪类适合你

China attaches a letter to every visa that stands for the purpose of the visit. Choosing the wrong letter is one of the most common causes of a delay or a refusal, because the supporting documents must match the stated purpose. The table below shows the four categories that travelers most often confuse with the L visa.

Which Chinese visa letter fits which purpose
CategoryPurposeTypical stay per entryCore supporting document
L (Tourism)Sightseeing, holidays and toursShort stay, commonly 30 to 90 days per entryItinerary with return flights and hotels, or an invitation letter from a Chinese side. Waived at US posts since January 2024
M (Business)Commercial and trade activity, meetings, trade fairsShort stay, usually up to 90 days per entryInvitation from a Chinese trade partner or a trade fair letter
F (Exchange)Exchanges, visits, study tours and non-commercial cooperationShort stay, usually up to 180 days per entryInvitation from a Chinese unit or individual
Z (Work)Employment by a Chinese entityResidence permit after entry, normally renewed yearlyForeigner Work Permit Notification issued by the employer

A few rules of thumb keep applicants out of trouble. If you will be paid by a Chinese company, you need the Z route, and no tourist visa makes that legal. If your visit generates business revenue or you are negotiating contracts, M fits. If you are touring, studying local culture, or just exploring for fun, L is the letter. Immigration officers compare the visa letter, your answers at the border and the actual activity, so keep the story consistent from the application form all the way to arrival.

If your true purpose sits on the boundary, such as combining a little business with a longer holiday, declare the primary purpose honestly and let the consular officer decide. Do not try to fit an employment plan under an L visa, because that is the fastest way to a refusal and to trouble at the border later.

3 Recent changes: the 2026 application landscape

Four changes shape the L visa application in 2026, and none of them requires you to do anything radically different, but each changes the steps below. First, the application moved online. Chinese missions now use the China Online Visa Application system, COVA, which began replacing the old paper process across posts in late 2025. You complete the form and upload your documents online first, wait for an online review, and only then bring your passport to a visa center or consulate. There is no longer a PDF form to download and print before you know whether your file is complete. Start at the official COVA portalCOVA 官方入口 or the portal your local mission links to.2026 年有四项变化塑造了 L 签证申请,每一项都不要求你做什么激进的事,但都会影响下面的步骤。

Second, the short stay biometric burden is temporarily lighter. Since mid December 2025, and through 31 December 2026, applicants for single or double entry short stay visas, meaning stays of 180 days or less, are exempt from fingerprint collection at most posts. That exemption covers the typical L application. The long standing permanent exemptions still apply too: applicants under 14 or over 70, and anyone whose fingerprints were recorded for a Chinese visa within the past five years on the same passport, are normally skipped entirely. Long term categories such as work and residence visas still require in person biometrics.

Third, the fee picture is friendlier but temporary. Chinese missions in several countries, including the United States, are running a reduced visa fee schedule that currently lasts until 31 December 2026. A US citizen applying for an L visa pays a flat US$140 regardless of how many entries they request, down from the regular reciprocal rate. Section 7 gives the details. Fourth, the surrounding visa-free landscape keeps expanding, which quietly changes who even reaches the L visa counter: the unilateral 30 day list now runs to 50 countries including the United Kingdom and Canada from February 2026, and the transit window has grown to 240 hours. See the transit guide过境免签指南 for the current list and its conditions.

One clarification saves confusion: a fully electronic tourist visa is still not issued. What has gone digital is the form, the review and the appointment. The visa itself remains a sticker in your passport, and you still need the physical passport for the sticker to be placed and checked at the border.

4 The application route, step by step

Once you have confirmed that an L visa is required, the route is the same in nearly every country: an online stage followed by a short in person stage. Apply where you legally reside, not just where you happen to be travelling, because Chinese missions divide the world into consular districts and usually insist you file in the district of your residence.

Step one, create an account on the official online application portal for your mission and fill in the application form. Have your passport, a digital photo and your planned itinerary beside you. Step two, upload the required documents and a photo that meets the specification, then submit. The system returns an online review, which usually takes a few working days, and may ask for more material. Step three, when the status shows that your passport may be submitted, print the confirmation slip with the barcode and sign the form. Step four, bring your passport and the original documents to the visa center or consulate, in person or through an authorised agent where one is allowed.

Step five, pay the fee and wait out the processing time, which starts from the day your passport is handed over, not from the day you finish the online form. Step six, collect your passport when the status shows it is ready, and check the visa sticker before you leave the counter. The table below sums up the standard speed options; section 7 covers the cost side of each.

Processing speed options for an L visa in 2026
ServiceTypical turnaroundWho can use it
StandardAround 4 working days from passport submissionEveryone; the default option
Express2 to 3 working days for an extra feeApplicants in a hurry; fee depends on the post
Rush or urgentSame or next working day for a higher feeGenuine emergencies only, subject to consular approval

The numbers above are the standard figures published by Chinese missions such as the Consulate General in Chicago驻芝加哥总领馆 for its regular and express service. Some posts add a few working days during Chinese public holiday peaks, so plan a buffer rather than submitting on the last possible day.

Practical lead time: start about four to six weeks before departure. That leaves room for the online review, any requests for extra documents, the processing days, and a reapplication if something is refused. Four working days of processing is not the same as four weeks of safety.

5 Documents you need to prepare

The document list for an L visa is short, but the rules around each item are strict, and small mistakes cause more delays than missing files. What follows matches the material lists published by Chinese missions such as the Embassy in Singapore驻新加坡大使馆, with the US variation called out where it applies.L 签证的材料清单不长,但每一项的规矩都很严,小错误造成的延误比缺文件还多。

  • Passport.护照。Remaining validity of more than six months from the application date, at least two blank visa pages, no damage, plus a photocopy of the photo page.
  • Online form. The completed COVA application, printed and signed, plus the passport submission slip with its barcode once the online review is done.
  • Photo.照片。One recent color photo on a plain white background, 33 by 48 mm, face fully visible, no glasses, no hat, no white top. The online upload usually needs a JPEG around 354 by 472 pixels.
  • Trip proof. In most countries, issued return flight bookings plus hotel reservations covering the whole stay, or an L visa invitation letter from a Chinese unit or individual that states your personal details, your itinerary and the inviter. US missions have waived this paperwork for tourist applicants since January 2024, but officers may still ask questions.
  • Visa history. Copies of any previous Chinese visa or residence permit, and the photo pages of previous passports that carried them, usually covering the past five years.

A few extra documents apply depending on who you are. If you apply outside your home country, you need proof of legal residence in that country, such as a residence permit, visa or study document. If you once held Chinese nationality, expect to show your previous Chinese passport and your naturalisation proof on a first application. If you changed your name, bring the official change document. Applicants under 18 add a birth certificate or equivalent, the passports of the parents, and a signed parental consent letter when travelling without them.

Consistency matters more than volume. The name on the form must match the passport exactly, the travel dates on the hotel and flight documents must agree with the form, and the photo must match the person who walks in. Consular officers see thousands of applications and are fast at spotting files where the numbers do not add up. If your plans are still soft, give dates you can defend, and avoid inventing a detailed itinerary that you will never follow.

  • Booking help. Where itinerary documents are required, you can reserve and hold flights and hotels through Trip.comTrip.com and export the confirmation before you submit, so your file shows concrete dates.

6 What happens at the visa center

Where a China Visa Application Service Center operates, it handles the intake on behalf of the consulate: it checks your file, collects your fingerprints when they are required, takes the fees and returns your passport. Where no center exists, such as the United States, the consulate itself runs the counter. The on site routine is shorter than most people expect, and it is mostly a matter of waiting for your number to come up.

The usual sequence runs like this. You take a queue ticket at the entrance or on arrival. When your number is called, an intake officer checks that the application is complete, reviews your documents and may ask a few plain questions about your trip: which cities, how long, where you will stay. If your age and visa type require fingerprints, a staff member walks you to the biometric desk, which takes a minute. You then pay at the fee counter and receive a collection slip that states your expected pickup date. Keep that slip, because it is your ticket to get the passport back.

Some centers offer paid conveniences: a fast lane that skips the queue for priority processing, extended hours at the end of the working day, and staff who help you fill the form. A few centers accept passport submission by courier. All of these are optional extras on top of the visa fee, and their availability varies by center, so check the local site before you assume they exist.

One habit saves most of the friction: check every document before you travel to the center. Bring the printed confirmation slip, the signed form, your passport, the exact photo, and every original that the online review asked you to show. The officers can only process what is in your folder, and a missing original usually means a second visit rather than a quick fix at the counter.

A modern Chinese service hall with numbered counters, a digital timetable and queue rails, where staff help visitors in person
Numbered counters and queue rails keep the on site process orderly, even when the hall is quiet.

7 Fees and processing times in 2026 2026 费用与办理时效

China prices visas by reciprocity: what you pay is decided mainly by the passport you hold, not by the visa letter you ask for. The exact number therefore differs by nationality and by post, and publishing one universal price would mislead you. What stays constant is the structure, so read the two tables below as a map of how the fee is built, then confirm the numbers on the official fee page of your own mission.

How the L visa fee is built in 2026
PayerWhat they payNotes
US citizens applying at a US missionFlat US$140 for any entry countReduced reciprocal rate; the schedule currently runs to 31 December 2026
Other nationalities at the same US missionsA tiered fee, roughly US$30 to US$90 by number of entriesThe reduced schedule also applies to these applicants until end 2026
Applicants routed through a visa centerThe consular fee for their nationality plus a center service feeService fee varies by country; courier and premium services cost extra

For comparison, the fastest way to keep the fee low is to ask only for the entries you need, although under the reduced US schedule a single and a ten year multiple entry cost the same flat amount. Every published schedule changes, and the current reductions are temporary, so treat any number here as a snapshot. The Consulate General in Chicago publishes its current schedule on its official site, and the China Visa Application Service Center中国签证申请服务中心 lists the service fees it charges in each country.

Speed options and what they add
ServiceProcessing timeExtra fee (typical examples)
StandardAbout 4 working daysNone, included in the visa fee
Express2 to 3 working daysAround US$25 at US missions
Rush or urgentSame or next working dayAround US$37 at US missions, emergencies only

Three practical notes close this section. First, fees are non refundable, even if the visa is refused, so check your file before you pay. Second, the processing clock starts only after your passport is submitted in person, which is why the online stage should happen early. Third, if you use a visa agency, its fee is entirely separate from the official charges, and the two are often confused in online quotes.

8 After it is issued: check, enter, register, extend

The visa sticker carries five facts that you should read before you leave the counter: the category letter, the number of entries, the validity dates, the duration of stay per entry, and the spelling of your name. A mismatch in your name or passport number is worth fixing on the spot, because no airline or border officer will let a visibly wrong sticker slide. Validity tells you the window during which you may enter China; duration of stay tells you how many days you may remain after each entry, counted from the day after you arrive.

Before you fly, prepare the two arrival formalities that catch visitors out. File the electronic arrival declaration before your flight if your route uses it, and know that a printed landing card is no longer the default at Chinese ports. Our arrival card guide入境卡指南 walks through the form field by field. Within 24 hours of arrival, your accommodation must be registered with the police: hotels do this automatically when you check in, while a stay in a private home requires you or your host to register at the local police station. See our hotel check in guide酒店入住指南 for the registration paperwork.

If your plans change while you are inside China, act before your permitted stay ends. A short stay extension is possible for a genuine reason, such as continuing tourism or a medical need, and you apply at the exit entry administration office of the local public security bureau, ideally with several days to spare. Extensions are discretionary and usually granted in short increments. Do not overstay while you wait for an answer: the penalties for illegal residence start at a warning and climb to a daily fine with a cap, and a serious overstay can bring detention and a re-entry ban.

Once your visa is in hand and your entry path is settled, two more pieces of the pre trip puzzle deserve attention before you board: how you will pay for things and how you will stay connected. The QR code payment world and the connectivity landscape in China differ from what most visitors know, and both are easier to sort out before departure.

9 Refusals, mistakes and changing category later

Refusals are uncommon for a straightforward tourism file, but they happen, and the reasons are remarkably consistent. The list starts with paperwork: an incomplete form, travel dates that do not match the hotel and flight documents, a photo that fails the spec, or a passport with less than six months of validity, damage, or too few blank pages. It continues with history: an unexplained previous refusal, a past overstay in China, or irregular exit stamps that raise a question, such as a DT mark from a Hong Kong crossing. It ends with signals that the visitor may not leave: no visible job or family ties to return to, or documents that look fabricated.

The productive response to a refusal is not an appeal, because there is no formal appeal process, but a corrected reapplication. Read whatever reason the notice gives, fix that specific problem, and apply again with a stronger file. Fees are not refunded, which is one more reason to submit clean work the first time. Budget a reapplication into your calendar if a refusal would sink the trip.

What about changing the visa after you are inside China? Extending a short stay is the routine option and follows the rules in section 8. Changing from the L visa to another short stay category is possible only in narrow cases, when the reason for the stay genuinely changes and you apply at the local exit entry administration before your permitted stay ends, with documents that prove the new purpose. Approval is discretionary, so treat it as a possibility, never a plan.

The one change the L visa cannot do for you is work. You cannot legally take a job, receive a salary, or start the work permit process on a tourist visa, and trying to do so risks fines, detention and deportation. The compliant route to employment runs outside China: the employer obtains a Foreigner Work Permit Notification, you apply for a Z visa at a Chinese mission abroad, you re-enter China, and only then do you apply for a work type residence permit within the set window. The National Immigration Administration国家移民管理局 publishes the official guide to visa extension, change and reissuance, and its 12367 hotline answers in English.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your passport and your route. Ordinary passport holders of the 50 visa-free countries can enter for up to 30 days, and many nationalities can use the 240 hour visa-free transit when they continue to a third country. If neither applies, for example for most round trips by US citizens, an L visa is required.

The unilateral 30 day visa-free list runs to 50 countries and currently includes the United Kingdom and Canada since February 2026, most of the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and several American states. The United States is not on the list. The policy for most of the 50 runs to 31 December 2026, so always check the current list before booking.

Only if your route qualifies: you enter and leave through a designated port, and you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours. A return flight straight home does not qualify, and the stay is limited to the designated transit area. For a longer trip or a plain round trip, you still need an L visa.

Validity is the window in which you may enter China, shown as start and end dates on the sticker. Duration of stay is how many days you may remain after each entry, counted from the day after you arrive and shown separately on the sticker or stamped at the border.

The duration of stay is decided by the consular officer and printed on the sticker. Tourist visas are typically issued with 30 to 90 days per entry, while some passports receive a longer window. For US citizens the visa is often issued as a multiple entry visa valid for up to ten years, with each stay still capped by its own duration of stay.

China prices visas by reciprocity, so the fee depends on your passport. As examples, US citizens pay a flat US$140 at US missions under a reduced schedule running to 31 December 2026, and other nationalities applying there pay a tiered fee of roughly US$30 to US$90. Where a visa center handles the file, its own service fee is added on top.

Standard processing is around four working days from the day your passport is handed in, plus a few days of online review before that. Express service takes two to three working days and rush service is available for genuine emergencies. Apply four to six weeks before departure to leave room for the whole sequence.

At US missions, tourist applicants have not needed to submit return flights, hotel bookings, itineraries or invitation letters since January 2024. In most other countries these are still the standard trip proof, either issued bookings covering the whole stay or an L visa invitation letter. Check the material list of your own mission.

Only when you do not provide the itinerary documents. The letter must come from a Chinese unit or individual and state your personal details, your itinerary with arrival and departure dates, and the inviter information with a signature or seal. Where itinerary documents are accepted, the invitation letter is optional.

Usually yes for applicants aged 14 to 70, but a temporary waiver runs to 31 December 2026 and covers single or double entry short stay visas, which includes the typical L visa. Permanent exemptions apply to applicants under 14 or over 70, and to those who gave fingerprints for a Chinese visa within the past five years on the same passport.14 至 70 周岁申请人通常需要,但现行临时豁免有效期至 2026 年 12 月 31 日,覆盖一次或两次入境的短期签证,典型 L 签证即在此列。

You can apply to extend a short stay before it expires at the local exit entry administration, with a genuine reason. Changing the category is possible only in narrow cases with a real change of purpose and approval is discretionary. You cannot change an L visa into a work visa in China; employment requires exiting and applying for a Z visa abroad.

Illegal residence penalties start with a warning and rise to a daily fine, commonly reported around RMB 500 per day with a cap near RMB 10,000, and serious cases can bring detention of 5 to 15 days and a re-entry ban. Apply for an extension or leave before your permitted stay ends.

No. The L visa admits you to mainland China only, and Hong Kong and Macau run their own entry rules. If you leave mainland China for Hong Kong, a single entry L visa is used up, and you would need a fresh visa or another qualifying entry route to return to the mainland.
