The Golden Route is the classic first trip to China: Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, usually in that order, linked by high-speed rail. It packs the country's headline sights into one journey, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army, and the Shanghai skyline, without the logistical sprawl of a bigger loop. China's inbound tourism set a record in 2025: 154.5 million visits (up 17.1% year on year), including 35.17 million foreign visitors (up 30.6%). Most visitors fly into Beijing, take the train west to Xi'an for two or three nights, then ride the rail east to Shanghai and fly home from there. 3 Beijing: the capital layer 北京：首都这一层

Spend three or four nights. The Forbidden City and a Great Wall day trip (Mutianyu or Badaling) are non-negotiable, then add a temple, a hutong lane and a good dinner. 4 Xi'an: where China's story begins 西安：中国故事开始的地方

Two or three nights here. The Terracotta Army is the headline, best seen on a half-day trip east of the city, then the city wall, the Muslim Quarter for food, and the bell tower at night. 5 Shanghai: the modern face 上海：现代的一面

Three nights to close. The Bund and the riverside skyline are the postcard, but the old French Concession, a museum morning and a water-town day trip give the city its texture. 6 How to connect them by rail 怎么用高铁连起来

The three cities sit on one high-speed line, which is exactly why the route works. Beijing to Xi'an is about four to six hours, Xi'an to Shanghai about six to eight, depending on the train.
